The game was invented by the Israeli company Gigantic, which operates the machine from its warehouse in Petah Tikva, Israel. The name comes from the claw game, in which the player uses a joystick to manipulate a claw in an attempt to grab objects.

Users can install the app for free from Google Play, the App Store (iOS/iPadOS) or log on to Clawee's website from their desktop. They buy tokens, select the arcade and start playing. Each machine has different prizes with different prices.

As beginners, they play simple games to get cheap prizes.  When players win, they can collect their prizes, which are delivered to their homes, or they can exchange them for gold coins to play more games. They can earn coins by inviting friends or by logging in daily. Players can become VIP members for just $4. They will then receive free shipping on all wins and the ability to play games on VIP machines, as well as more expensive prizes and unlock daily logins.

Players can only manoeuvre the claw in two directions: sideways or towards the back of the cabinet and try to place the prize over the chute. They can watch the game from one of two cameras located at different angles: one at the front and the other at the side, where they can watch the others play and view a video of each machine's final win.
